We are transforming former industrial halls into a “workshop for developing the future” at Campus V in the center of Dornbirn. Building on a former spinning and weaving mill, we are renovating the structures in a resource-conscious way, tailoring them through a participatory process to the needs of our future tenants, and providing maximum room for growth and networking.
The City of Dornbirn acquired the site in 2000 and previously used the 12,000 m² halls for storage and research purposes (such as the International Rhine Regulation research project). Now, these halls are being turned into a hub for the creative industries, innovation, art, and culture—writing the next chapter in the history of Vorarlberg’s industrial heritage.
More than just a place
Thousands of people once found employment here, making a major contribution to the prosperity of Vorarlberg’s textile industry. Today, in the digital age, work looks very different. We face a greater need than ever to develop innovative solutions to the challenges of our time, driven by a commitment to shape a positive future.
Creativity is the raw material of the future
Together with the State of Vorarlberg and economic partners, the City of Dornbirn decided to give innovative ideas room to grow—quite literally. To make this happen, the former industrial site is being redeveloped with purpose, resource efficiency, and a clear view toward the future. Thus, CampusVäre was born (2021).
Our Mission, or "What we do"
We are bringing life back to the halls. CampusVäre is a space where people can move in to work, research, and experiment creatively, innovatively, and sustainably. We act as landlords, designers, and curators of these spaces. This means we engage with the rich history of this industrial site through both content and architecture, using culture as a methodology to give these spaces meaningful new purpose.
Architectural engagement
In line with secondary resource use and urban mining, our goal is to preserve the well-maintained building fabric as much as possible while working with recycled materials wherever we can. We have placed our trust in the architectural firm JK&P to realize this vision. They are "furnishing" our halls with modular timber systems that can be customized in size and features to meet our tenants’ needs. To us, our tenants are pioneers—because around here, things are done a little differently. Normally, you start with a blueprint and build a structure around it. For us, it’s the reverse: the building is already here, and we develop the concept around it. It’s a challenge that inspires and drives us.
Culture as a methodology and solution
We guide the transformation process from old industrial halls into a center for innovation, creative industries, art, and culture through a wide range of participatory formats. Our events always connect to themes of sustainability across design, architecture, politics, society, or science. They offer a window into current developments and a glimpse into how we envision the future at CampusVäre: creative, innovative, and resource-conscious.
